Snap FX Snap FX for Android Phones

Snap FX is an application for creating and manipulating images right on your phone. Many other camera and image-editing applications in the Android Market won’t allow you to deal with full-sized images and that is what sets Snap FX apart from the rest: With Snap FX you can take pictures and manipulate them without scaling them down to smaller versions (up to 5MPixels on 1st generation phones, up to 9MPixels on 2nd generation phones).

When you download Snap FX from the Android Market, you’ll notice it asks for an internet permission. The internet permission is used only to report the problem back to me if the application force-closes unexpectedly. Except for the phone model and the problem-report, no other data about you or the phone will be sent back to me.

It also asks for a ‘Read SMS or MMS’ permission. This permission is only used so that a captured image from Camera FX can be attached to an SMS or MMS message.

Snap FX contains two modules called Camera FX and Pictures FX.

Pictures FXPictures FX

Use Pictures FX to browse and modify the pictures on your phone. The first time you start Pictures FX, it could be a bit slow due to the application generating thumbnails freshly. Don’t worry, after this it’ll be much faster. Pictures FX is an alternative to the Gallery application that is shipped with your phone and it has the following features:

  • Change your pictures by applying color-effects

When you add or change color-effects, the changes are shown real-time, providing immediate feed-back on how the effect changes your picture. Color-effects can be applied to your unscaled images and you can chain multiple color-effects in a row.

  • Save modified images

Color-effects are not applied to the image file on your phone. These modifications are stored separately. However, you can save a copy of the modified image to your phone’s SD card.

  • Rotate, re-size and crop your images
  • Browse through your pictures in various galleries

You can quickly browse through your libraries of pictures using a grid of thumbnails. Browse through all your pictures or just through the pictures from a chosen library/folder.

  • Select multiple images

Select multiple images for deletion or to rotate a number of them simultaneously.

  • Browse through your pictures one by one

You can browse through your images, moving from one to another, by just swiping your finger.

  • Easy Zoom-in and zoom-out

Zoom-in by selecting the area of the image that you want to zoom into and zoom-out by using the zoom-out button or the zoom-menu.

  • Full integration with the phone

Choose Pictures FX for handling all your image related activities on your phone, such as sharing images by e-mail, Twitter, Facebook, etc. or using images for your contacts or wall paper.

Camera FXCamera FX

Use Camera FX to take pictures with your phone. It is an alternative to the Camera application that is shipped with your phone:

  • Easy access to picture effects, horizon finder, composition grid and GPS.
  • Change picture size easily.
  • Support for all focus and flash modes available on your phone.
  • Support for manual and auto focus

as long as your phone supports it.

  • Saves EXIF

Pictures are saved with EXIF tags that are compatible with most software editing applications.

You can purchase Snap FX from these markets for a small fee.

Release Notes

Snap FX has been created for all Android phone models, Android 1.5 and up, and tested on many but not all phone models. If you have any issue, let me know and I’ll fix it. The Camera FX has some problem on Sony Ericsson XPeria models.

Snap FX may not run correctly on custom ROMs. If you have your phone flashed with a custom ROM, such as Cyanogen, MoDaCo, etc., I cannot guarantee Snap FX to operate correctly. But you can certainly try if it does! ;-)

In planning

  • Digital Zoom.
  • More color-effects.
  • A way to apply pseudo ‘color profiles’ to pictures taken by Camera FX.

Working on right now

  • The Samsung Moment does not properly report its flash capabilities to Android. Therefore, changing flash-mode is not possible. I’m looking at a work-around for this issue.
  • Right now I’m mainly in fix mode to fix any issues that are found by my customers a.s.a.p.
  • But also, I am starting to implement filters for image modifications that are non-linear (curves, levels, etc.), modifications that need scanning near-by pixels (sharpening, blurring, edge detection, etc.) and geometric modifications (warp, perspective, etc.). This will take a little time, but they will be part of Snap FX in the near future!

Version 1.03.00 (5/22/2010)

  • Made the camera (Camera FX) much faster.
  • Added a thumbnail of the last picture taken to the preview screen of Camera FX.

Version 1.02.05 (5/12/2010)

  • Added new effect ‘Contrast per Color’. This allows you to decrease the red, green and/or blue amount in the shadow areas while increasing them in the light areas (or vice versa). It can be used to create crude cross-process, velvia, provia, lomo, etc. type effects.
  • Fixed an issue where saving an image for an SMS or MMS message failed.

Version 1.02.04 (5/1/2010)

  • Some 1st generation phones did not give any CPU cycles to the background Image Saving process. Made this process a foreground type of service, with Thread.MIN_PRIORITY, however the phone can still get rather sluggish when saving is going on. Thank you, Mariano, for helping me out with this.
  • Fixed thumbnail issue in Details screen when showing from Image Editor.
  • Fixed Camera FX crash on Liquid Acer A1! Thank you Jasper for helping me out!

Version 1.02.01 (4/18/2010)

  • Fixed a division-by-zero error when the Image Editor is closed.

Version 1.02.00 (4/17/2010)

  • Larger pictures can now be saved.Up to 5MPixel images for 1st gen phones. Up to 9MPixel images for 2nd gen phones.
  • Fixed various little issues.

Version 1.01.00 (3/28/2010)

  • No longer necessary to ‘long-press’ for entering ‘View/Edit’ mode. Single click brings you to ‘View/Edit’ mode immediately
  • By caching large thumbnails, moving through the pictures one-by-one by swiping your finger is quite a bit faster on slower phones.

Version 1.00.11 (3/20/2010)

  • Fixed rotation issues in the ‘View/Edit’ screen.
  • When phone is out-of-memory when zooming in, Snap FX now handles it much better.
  • Moved the ‘View/Edit’ screen to run in its own process. This will improve the phone’s handling of memory a bit.

Version 1.00.10 (3/9/2010)

  • Fixed some issues reported by customers.
  • Fixed the ‘thumbnail corruption issue’ seen occasionally on the HTC Hero or HTC Eris. Thank you for your help, Jeremy! This corruption could show up in other gallery/album-viewer apps after having used Pictures FX. This corruption no longer happens because Pictures FX will now generate its own set of thumbnails, separate from other apps.

Version 1.00.08 (3/6/2010)

  • Needed to handle low-memory on a Motorola Blur (1.5) better.

Version 1.00.07 (3/5/2010)

  • Fixed a force-close on a G1 when changing Camera Settings (scene mode)
  • Fixed an out-of-memory issue on the Hero.

Version 1.00.06 (3/3/2010)

  • Fixed a force-close when drawing ‘unloaded’ thumbnails
  • Version 1.00.05 disabled the ‘Send Error Report’. This is now enabled again.

Version 1.00.05 (2/27/2010)

  • Fixed a force-close when cropping an image, then change the phone’s orientation (or keyboard slide-out) and then saving the cropped image. The cropping activity reported a force-close. This no longer happens.

Version 1.00.04 (2/25/2010)

  • Fixed a force-close on Droid Eris when memory is low and the effects-list is sliding into view when the user starts editing an image. This situation is now handled more gracefully.

Version 1.00.03 (2/20/2010)

  • Fixed a force-close on when showing rotated thumbnails in certain conditions. Pictures FX was trying to draw a unloaded thumbnail in the grid/list view.

Version 1.00.02 (2/18/2010)

  • Patched force-close (IOException) when camera is auto-focusing on HTC Hero. Real fix is pending!
  • Fixed missing thumbnail in ‘Details’ dialog.Sometimes the ‘Details’ dialog showed an icon indicating a missing/broken image. The image is fine, but the ‘Details’ dialog didn’t show the appropriate thumbnail.

Version 1.0.x (2/15/2010)

  • Initial Version.
